Body water estimation in the newborn using tritiated water.

چکیده
Of all the substances used for the estimation in vivo of total body water content, the most attractive are the isotopes of hydrogen, since they enter into all the metabolic processes involving water and have no selective secretion or storage. Deuterium was the first substance used for body water estimation in vivo (Hevesy and Hofer, 1934) and is preferable to tritium because it is not radioactive; but assay of deuterium by the falling drop method is difficult and takes time to establish, and other methods, such as the mass spectrometer, require expensive apparatus. The introduction of the liquid scintillation counter has made possible the use of tritium, the radioactive isotope of hydrogen, in safe doses. Imperato, Giovannelli, Battistini, Ghirardini and Ronchetti (1960) used tritium for estimating total body water in older children, but there is no report of its use in the newborn baby. This paper describes the use of tritium in newborn children and the sources of error in the present method.

Effect of acute tritiated water (HTO) exposure on Maze learning in adult Swiss albino mice
Background: Brain is the most important organ as it controls and co- ordinates all the activities of our body. Reports on neuroethological investigations in mice particularly associated with learning and memory after radiation exposure are very scanty. Hence, present investigation is an attempt to examine the effects of low dose tritiated water (HTO) acute exposure on adult Swiss albino mice in...
متن کاملTritium incorporation in rats chronically exposed to tritiated food or tritiated water for three successive generations.
Wistar rats have continuously ingested tritiated food (48.1 kBq/g) or tritiated water (37.0 kBq/ml) from three weeks before mating of P0 through delivery of the F3 generation. An analysis of tissues at various ages during treatment shows that: (1) tritium incorporation into tissues of rats life-time exposed to tritiated food was on the average 3.53=0.38 times higher than after similar exposure ...
متن کاملMEASUREMENT OF D2O IN WATER USING 2H(?,n)1H REACTION
Utilization of Photodisintegration reaction of Deuterium, 2H(?,n)1H, is a precise technique for determining the percentage of 2H in tritiated and natural water. The 23Na(n,?)24Na reaction is a suitable ?-source for producing the 2H(?,n)1H reaction. Tehran Research Reactor was used as a neutron source for producing 24Na isotopes. The BF3 detectors were used to detect the neutron emission of H2 c...
متن کاملCytological damage produced in the mouse testes by tritiated thymidine, tritiated water and x-rays.
Irradiation of the mouse testes was carried out using internally distributed tritium from injected tritiated thymidine and tritiated water and also using external whole body irradiation with 200 kVp X-rays. The inability of intermediate spermatogonia to divide twice and produce resting primary spermatocytes was used as a criterion of biological damage and the following conclusions were reached:...
متن کاملEstimation of pore water pressure in the body of earth dams during construction with intelligent models
One of the basic measures in managing the stability of earth dams is to accurately estimate the amount of pore water pressure in the body of the dam during and after its construction. In this study, three different models of artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive neural-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and gene expression programming (GEP) to estimate the pore water pressure in the body of Kab...
